Goodbye Lenin

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

Goodbye Lenin

I saw this film years ago, and then bought a DVD copy a few months back. It's about an East Berlin family, set mostly during 1989-1990, the period which saw the end of East Germany. (Well, the end of the East German state. The land and the people are still there.) Highly comedic elements, but also a very dark and depressing side to this film.

Popped it into the machine on Friday, without even thinking that Friday was the 24th anniversary of the end of the DDR. I finally realised the significance of the date I had chosen to watch it, near the end of the film, as there is a specific reference to the date therein.

I went to Berlin for the first, and so far, only time in my life a few months back. Watching it after having been to Berlin makes it a rather different experience. I'm not sure, but I think I might actually have caught a glimpse of the hotel I stayed in at one point.

So bye bye DDR, I never got to know you in person, but sometimes I feel like I did, just a little bit.

I haven't seen it but I should. My first trip to Berlin was in 1999 to see the Scottish Claymores play the Berlin Thnunder in the first game Berlin played. I was there again in 2011, as I have said several time sit is one of my favourite cities.

I recall learning deustch zu sprechen im hochschule during the era of the DDR and the other DR. About as close as I got to visiting it.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

If you are seeing an apparent paradox, that means you are missing something.

The "other DR" was known, outwith Germany at least as the FRG.

Well, it was an "RD", not a "DR" :)

My best attempt at a literal translation:

DDR - German Democratic Republic
BRD - Federal Republic of Germany (consistent with your "FRG" above)
