Public Service Pacman

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

Public Service Pacman

Postby Мастер » Mon May 11, 2015 3:38 pm

So, apparently there was some big boxing match a little while ago. Here, it was on Sunday; I first heard about it Thursday. Someone asked if I was planning to watch the big fight; having never heard of this particular fight before, I had no plans at that time. I was further informed that all the places at Clarke Quay were charging for admission, $100 or so. The two fighters were two people I've never heard of, including some chap from the Philippines who is apparently known as the "Pacman", since his family name begins with "Pac".

Saturday, I saw Super Rugby over at Clarke Quay; I chatted with the manager of the particular establishment about the boxing match. She told me they weren't going to show it, since they would have to pay $4,500 to have it on their three television screens. I guess this fight was a big deal after all.

Fast forward a few days, and I have the television on. And there it is - the same public service announcement I've seen probably dozens of times. Some guy from the Philippines tells us how to survive a natural disaster. And like always, they show us his name, only this time I notice it - Manny Pacquiao. The Pacman.

I have no interest in boxing but even I had heard of the fight in advance. I think Pacman lost, I'm not sure, but it wouldn't be surprising if a professional boxer defeated a scientist.

I cannot abide boxing, but Pacman did indeed lose and a lot of people are quite shouty about it.

We see him on TV all the time. He is featured in an ad for pistachio nuts.

If I had to, I could probably name a half dozen boxers. One of which, I only know because he makes good burgers. Or so I hear.

Okay, now I'm curious...

1) Muhammad Ali
2) George Foreman
3) Mike Tyson
4) Wasn't there a Holmes?
5) Wow, really?
6) Those two that just fought last week, but only because it was recent. In a month I won't have a clue.

Holyfield, yeah, he's one. Evander or something?

The other guy in the Thrilla in Manilla.

Rocky Marciano

I think there was some guy named Brando that could have been a contender.

Damn it, I know there are others but they escape me at the moment. I probably knew most of the guys that fought Ali because that was all in my youth and inescapable at the time.

Joe Frazer!

I don't think Rocky Balboa or Burgess Meredith count.

That was his brother John.

I could name a few more, but I suspect none who have fought in the last decade.

Being transpondean and having grown up in the 80's playing computer games, I also know Frank Bruno and Barry McGuigan. I also vaguely recall somebody with the surname Hatton? Meh. Not my sport.

MM Dandy mentioned a quarry in another thread, so...

Jerry Quarry.

John L Sullivan was a fighter from like 100+ years ago. When I think of him it is always the picture of him with his fists raised knuckles up, like a cartoon boxer.

John Holmes, porn star.

Here at Michigan State Univ. we have a large campus with numerous dormitories. Over at the east end, we had one named for some old university benefactor, one John C. Holmes. I lived in that dorm freshman year. We took a lot of ribbing. And I don't mean on condoms.

Oscar De la Hoya,
Lennox Lewis,
Buster Douglas,
the guy that got screwed over by the judges at the Seoul Olympics,
um....oh!
Tommy Morrison (Notable for testing positive for HIV, then denying he had it, and even questioned the existence of the virus altogether, and for increasingly bizarre behavior until he died at an early age.),
Jack Dempsey
Gene Tunney

Spoiler:
Looked it up, the unfortunate olympic boxer was Roy Jones, Jr., who went on to have a pretty good career.
