Still Game

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

Still Game

Has anybody seen Still Game? I'm sure my countryman will have done, and I'm not sure how extensively it has travelled. An extremely funny Scottish sit-com from a decade ago, which I commend wholeheartedly to the house.
A-nis bidh fios aig daoine nuair a tha mi a 'mionnachadh aig dhaibh.

An excellent series, we are particularly fond of Navid as a character.

As are we. Struggling to think of a bad character in the show, actually. It stayed consistently good for it's entire run, too - a rare achievement.

We don't get it in the U.S. I might be able to find it on-line.

Okay, cool. I prefer to download torrents and the show directly on my PC but that would work too.

I'm pretty sure it'll exist as torrents somewhere out there in t'internet. You may struggle with the accents and/or slang a bit - Heid and I are available for consultancy. It was subtitled, actually SUBTITLED, when shown in England.

We'll see how it goes. It's stuck at 0.20% at the moment.

Well I'd definitely need subtitles. When the woman in the first scene burst into her barrage, I didn't even recognize it as English. I thought, why are they suggesting this to anyone if it's in Gaelic anyway?

It's more Scots than English, really. A mxture of Scots and Scottish Standard English.

(Heid sounds exactly like that woman)

Ach. I always imagined Heid with a sort of Sean Connery-y voice. Everything he writes will sound different to me from now on.

No, not really. It was more of an explanation regarding the unfamiliarity.

That is an interesting point, because it wasn't unfamiliar at all, just unintellegible (for me). I immediately recognized the sound of it. I've been in love with the sound of Scots/Scottish Standard English/English with as Scottish accent since I first heard it on an Inter Rail tour in '86, and that love only intensified since I visited my then girlfriend/now wife in Glasgow, where she studied for half a year.

It gets more comprehensible. Honestly, I think the opening tirade from that character is about as impenetrable as the language gets during the entire run of the show.

I'd forgotten about your time in Scotland. If I recall, you never ventured to my neck of the woods?

Craig Ferguson as Craig Ferguson is pretty close to my accent growing up, we were born six months apart in the same hospital and grew up within 10-15 miles of one another. A few years in Dumfries and thirty in Edinburgh has mellowed mine but I'm told it is still more west than east.
