Beaking Bad

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

Beaking Bad

Has anyone seen Breaking Bad? (On Wikipedia)

It ran for 5 seasons on AMC beginning in 2008 and concluding in 2013. For its run, it was the highest rated show of anything on cable.

We didn't watch it when it was on originally but AMC's sister channel, Sundance, has been replaying it for the past few months. It just finished last night. At 3-4 per week, they were able to show all 62 episodes in just several months. And if anyone is interested, it begins again with Season 1 Episode 1 next Wednesday evening. We're going to watch it again. And I almost never watch stuff twice.

Basically, it tells the story of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who learns he is dying of lung cancer. He decides the best way to provide for his family after he is gone is to do so illegally. He puts his knowledge and skill to work and begins producing crystal meth. The rest of the story tells a very believable tale of a slow descent into that world and all it entails.

If you haven't seen it, I urge you to watch it. It is absolutely that good. And if you have, let's talk about it here.

I haven't seen it, but I've heard from people who absolutely loved it.

A drug-themed show, um, may not be easiest to find on the two major "official" television distribution systems. Perhaps I can pick up a DVD box next time I'm in Hong Kong (the HMV here sucks). I got Californication DVDs in Hong Kong, and have been watching them. I wonder if they would be censored here, or perhaps not available at all.

I have it all downloaded too. How could I easily get 17Gb worth of files to you?

But yeah, get it if you can.

I don't know that there's any good way :)

But, I should leave for Hong Kong one week from today. Assuming I get a visa. (I don't need a visa for Hong Kong, but I plan to cross over to the mainland.)

The HMV is at Central. There's one in Kowloon as well :)

Okay, that sounds good. Let me know. If nothing else, I could upload the individual episodes to the server here and you could snag them a few at a time.

I started watching it but only got a couple of episodes in. It didn't engage me for some reason. Everyone else I know loved it.

Me neither. I couldn't bear to watch it.

I tend not to like "continuing dramas", and whenever I tune by this one it has yet to interest me.

It is certainly serialized. You can't just watch it here and there and expect to get anything out of it. It is 62 episodes of a continuing story and there is not usually a story self contained in the individual episodes.

If you ever decide to give it a try, you need to start at S01E01. It's beginning again on Sundance next Wednesday and they show 3-4 episodes at a time so you get a lot more out of it.

ETA: I wonder if it would have held my attention had I had to watch just one episode a week for 13 weeks and then wait until next year for more. I like to binge-watch stuff like this. We really did find it riveting, but being able to watch a lot at a time over just a few months helped a great deal.

I read the raving reviews and watched a few choice scenes, like here (greatly recommend the channel). I found it engaging, but I just do not have a lot of time to watch TV. When I do, it's either zapping around channels on normal TV or downloaded CSI episodes. I have all of Star Trek TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and all the movies; all of Monty Python, all of BattleStar Galactica, three seasons of Downton Abbey and two of House of Cards. I won't get to watch it at least until all the kids are at school. If that.

That clip was awesome!

I guess the show would best be described as a character study in extreme circumstances. What can you do when really pushed?

So the description makes me think of movies like the Bourne Identity, or some Schwarzenegger flicks. I realize they are also heavily action oriented, but the character is definitely under stress. Predator.

Yeah, this isn't action oriented at all. It's very cerebral. There is drama, and there is certainly some pretty intense violence but most of it happens off camera. For example, you never see Danny Trejo having his head removed. You only see it later, being carried across the desert floor on the back of a tortoise.

If you like drama and intense story lines, you should give it a try. I certainly understand disliking the serialized aspect of it, but sine it is available in its entirety now, you can pretty much avoid that and watch as much as you want at a time.

I've watched it in spurts. It just doesn't seem to be building any momentum for me. My biggest take from is that if they ever plan on re-doing M*A*S*H within the next couple of years or so, Bryan Cranston must absolutely play Major Burns.

Did you watch them in order from the beginning? That's important.

When we started watching it a few months ago, we binge watched the first four episodes. I don't think just the first one or two would have had the same effect at sucking us in. Of course, it's not for everyone...
