War of the Worlds

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

War of the Worlds

Currently airing on subscription channel Epix, this is (I believe) originally a French/British production (correct me if I'm wrong, please).

Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern are the biggest (US/UK) stars, but there's a full complement of French actors in it as well.

Anyone seen this? I've watched the first two episodes and that was enough to have me pick up a sub to the channel (at least for the next 8 weeks).
Is there such a thing?

I’ve noticed it on Netflix (or maybe Prime) but have avoided it as it’s a book I’ve seen too many awful adaptations of. So, this one may not be as awful as usual?

I dunno, the Tom Cruise one left an awful bad taste in my mouth.

I can still watch the 1953 version, though when I came out, I saw it in a theater and was scared to death.

This has very little to do with the book - the creators have stated so up front. There is another WOTW out (or coming) that’s a BBC production that’s both a period piece and closer to the source material. I suspect I may check that out, too.

The BBC one is fucking awful, it was on here a few weeks ago. Like, FUCKING awful. I honestly don’t know anybody I know has seen it who would tell you any different. Watch it by all means, but set expectations to low, and don’t believe what they tell you about it being anything whatsoever like the book (despite the Victorian England setting).

I get that the one you mention isn’t meant to be like the book, my problem with the adaptations hasn’t been “but it’s not like the book!” in nature. I’ll watch it once we’re done with the series we’ve just started to binge watch (“Locke and Key”).

You’ll have to let me know what you think of Locke And Key.

Ha! Yeah - I haven’t gotten ‘round to it and do not see that happening, either.
