A short distraction

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

Before live music got shut down for two years here, I noticed that the local hard rock band bass player had five strings.

And the guitar player had seven strings.

I wasn't used to that.

5-string is quite common. I have seen 6-string, though the neck seems as wide as a sidewalk. Back in the 1960s Hagstrom made an 8-string bass, and I really wanted one. 8-string are still made. But an 8-string bass is really a 4-string with each string doubled an octave up. So analogous to a 12-string guitar.

7-strings guitar? There are a few ways to implement that. I have seen doubling just the G string, I have seen adding another string on the side.

Keith Richards - king of the rhythm guitar - usually removes a string, using just the top five. And also usually in an open tuning rather than conventional tuning.

You just can't...count... on strings anymore.

Not always easy to see it, but Greg Lake plays an 8-string bass in this Fanfare video.

Just a bassline hypothesis.

%/4 time is the feature of Take Five. Here is a 5/4 duel of bassists. Or maybe they just start as small 4-strings and grow into 5-strings.

Oh, and Aron Hodek is real, and amazing
