So, I have an old Nikkon film camera that is barely functioning, and that I haven't used for years. (Come to think of it, I wonder if there is undeveloped film in it?) I also have a little digital camera (Olympus, I think) that is point and shoot.

I'm interested in getting a better digital camera. It would be nice it the old Nikkon lenses I have worked on it, but that's not a super big deal.

Any recommendations?

I have a Panasonic DMC-TZ5 that is a damn fine compact digital.

I've got some cheap Olympus point-and-shoot digital, 8 megapixels and limited (I think 3x) optical zoom.

I also have some old manner of Nikon SLR film camera. It is my understanding that if I bought another Nikon, the old lenses would still work on it. However, it seems most of the cheaper Nikon DSLR cameras do not have an auto-focus motor built in, so either the lens must have it, or the auto focus won't work.

This can be resolved by buying a higher-level Nikon with an auto-focus motor built in, but it looks like those cost more than 1,000 USD, which is an awful lot for someone with a case of terminal cheapness to pay for a camera.

So I think the choices are,

a) Buy a cheap Nikon camera, allowing use of the existing lenses, but without auto focus.

b) Buy an expensive Nikon camera, allowing use of the existing lenses with auto focus.

c) Start over with a different brand of camera and lenses.
