Find the Asteroids

Postby Superluminal » Sat May 13, 2006 1:01 am

Below is a link to an animated gif of Comet Brooks, taken a few years ago at the Area 52 observatory. There are two asteroids in the field of view, but most of what appear to be moving objects are gamma ray strikes.

I found one almost right away, then spent a few minutes looking for the other one and gave up.
Below and to the right of the comet are 3 stars then 2 almost in a straight line. An asteroid passes just above the 2 stars.
The other one will have to wait until I'm not bleary eyed. Image Unless someone else finds it.

I don't see the second one either. I looked for a few minutes...

There are two asteroid visible. The one everybody has found, was a known asteroid before we took the picture. The other wasn't noticed until a couple of months later when we were showing the gif to some visitors to the observatory. We went back and checked, there were no other known asteroids in the field of view. By then it was too late to go back and find it. So we missed a chance to claim a new one because we didn't look at the image close enough.

I'll give Umop a chance to unblearyfy her eyes before I give the location of the other asteroid.
The second one is to the right and a bit below the obvious one. It is much dimmer, is moving to the right, and slightly upward.
I think you mistook Comet Brooks for the first asteroid,
and pointed out the real first asteroid.

Or I'm blind.

No cheating Umop.
On the left side of the image, about half way down, there is a small circle of faint stars. The circle is about half way between the edge of the image and one of the brighter stars on the image. The other asteroid is just below the circle moving left to right and is fainter than the first asteroid.
Thanks - I think I may have found it.
There's a bright star in the center left part of the picture. To the left of that and down slightly is an asterism that almost looks like a question mark. The second asteroid is much dimmer and doesn't seem to show in all the frames, but it is moving underneath the question mark, almost eclipsing the lowermost star.
Did I get it?

On simulpost, yep it looks like I got it. If I'd been a few minutes quicker I'd even have had a chance. :x
