June 17th, 1885 - the Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbour, by ship from France. It stood for more than 116 years south of Manhattan island, as a symbol of freedom. It was closed on September 11, 2001, "for reasons of safety and security", thereby symbolically reflecting what actually happened to the relation between liberty, safety, and security changed on that day. It was subsequently damaged badly in the nuclear war that ended the dominance of humans, and allowed for the rise of the apes.

June 17, 1953: A short-lived workers's uprising demanding lesser work-quotas, and free and fair elections in the German Democratic Republic is brutally put down by Soviet tanks and troops. The Soviet reaction made it very clear who was in charge and that no attempt at gaining freedom would be tolerated by the oppressor.

June 17 was remembered as the "Day of German Unity", a public holiday, in West Germany until re-unification (it's now the day of actual re-unification, 3 October)

And later James I of England.

In 1867, Maximilian I, the Emperor of Mexico, younger brother of the Austrian Emperor, was executed by firing squad by the Republican forces led by Benito Juárez.

I think it is entirely noteworthy (on this board at least) that on 19 June, 2014, Urauguay beat England 2 - 1 in a FIFA World Cup first round match.

Ha! I was extremely amused to spot this guy on the TV coverage, celebrating that second goal.
