My sister-in-law just got engaged during the local St. Patrick's Day march. The then-boyfriend made arrangements with the parade officials, and let the families know ahead of time with the details. It was pretty cool, actually.
My understanding was that St. Patrick was a runaway slave returned to evangelize the Emerald Isle (and chase away the snakes). I wasn't aware that he had been a slave trader, himself. Either way, the celebration is much overdone.
