May 18th, 1803 - Britain revokes the Treaty of Amiens and declares war on France!.

Always good to declare war on the Frenchies!

Conversely in May 1918 we were fighting with the French against the Germans at Amiens.

From yesterday, according to my wife's facebook:

May 31st, 2010 - Lianachan falls off a hill in the middle of nowhere, to his injury, and gets a free ride in a helicopter courtesy of the coastguard.

Back on track:

June 1st, 1495 - first recorded mention of Scotch whisky (“To Brother John Cor, by order of the King, to make aqua vitae VIII bolls of malt.”)
June 1st, 1670 – Perfidious Albion signs the secret Treaty of Dover with traditional best chums France, resulting in it declaring war on the Dutch Republic!
June 1st, 1794 - the battle of the Glorious First of June, first naval engagement in Perfidious Albion's current war on France (French Revolutionary Wars)
June 1st, 1985 - arrest of over 300 arseholes.

God I remember those arseholes. Claiming they didn't need insurance or road tax because the vehicles were their homes, generally being dicks.

According to Wikipedia, there were 537 arrests

If I can put my archaeomonologist (shady) hat on for a moment, I'm not convinced the festival that had been banned had necessarily been good for the care of the monument.

50 years ago today, some group of pop musicians hailing from a coastal city in the West of England published an "album", as it was called (apparently, a physical data store for repeated streaming by a mechanical device and sold preloaded with a number of musical pieces that couldn't be easily download, transferred or otherwise shared electronically) honouring a "Sergeant Pepper". There seems to be some signifcance to this, but it's buried in the mist of pre-digital technology. Maybe the archeologist can help?

5 years ago today, on 3 June, 2012 Berlin's new airport was to be opened for business. The opening was postponed in May. To this day, no credible opening date has been set. Costs have ballooned from G€ 2 to G€ 6.

12th September is Saragarhi Day commemorating an action fought by a small Sikh force against the Afghans. One of the series of thousands of small actions the British and Indian Armies fought against Afghan tribesmen that aren't included in any of our numbered wars against them.

If we counted things like that, we'd need to up the number of such wars from something like fourteen to something like eleventy kajillion.

Well, free beer in certain restaurants is certainly a good thing, it's true.

September 15th, 1830 - the opening of the first locomotive-hauled railway to connect two major cities, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It was also the first railway to rely exclusively on steam power, with no horse-drawn traffic permitted at any time; the first to be entirely double track throughout its length; the first to have a signalling system; the first to be fully timetabled; the first to be powered entirely by its own motive power; and the first to carry mail.

In related news.....

September 15th, 1830 - first person run over and killed by a train. William Huskisson, at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway....

(the sequence of events actually sounds like it would be quite funny, were it polite to laugh at such tragedy)

ETA Actually, the whole thing sounds quite funny.

Spoiler:
The Duke of Wellington felt that the remainder of the day's events should be cancelled following the accident at Parkside, and proposed to return to Liverpool. However, a large crowd had gathered in Manchester to see the trains arrive, and was beginning to become unruly. Wellington was persuaded to continue to Manchester. By the time the trains reached the outskirts of Manchester the crowd had become hostile and was spilling onto the tracks. With local authorities unable to clear the tracks, the trains were obliged to drive at low speed into the crowd, using their own momentum to push people out of the way. Eventually they arrived at Liverpool Road railway station in Manchester to be met by a hostile crowd, who waved banners and flags against the Duke and pelted him with vegetables. Wellington refused to get off the train, and ordered that the trains return to Liverpool. Mechanical failures and an inability to turn the locomotives meant that most of the trains were unable to leave Manchester. While the Duke of Wellington's train left successfully, only three of the remaining seven locomotives were usable. These three locomotives slowly hauled a single long train of 24 carriages back to Liverpool, eventually arriving 6 1⁄2 hours late after having been pelted with objects thrown from bridges by the drunken crowds lining the track.

You North Britons can be so grateful to have reimained under the calm and competent leadership of people who really know what they're doing, instead of being at the mercy of leftist head-in-the-clouds dreamers like Salmond and Sturgeon. The current British gouvernment is performing so well, there'll be a Tory landslide come the next general election in, umm, four or five...months, err, years, of course - when you have finally achieved what you always wanted: Getting out of the E. U. and finally being independent again.

You know, shiftless darkies who have been here for generations, and more importantly as soon as we get rid of all the EU doctors in the NHS there will be jobs for Britons! And jobs in the fields picking crops, you know, the jobs that Britons aren't qualified for or won't do. It will all be their fault. All of them.
