Ah well, so much for Empire 2.0. Apparently some countries don't have happy memories of Empire 1.0. Who'd have thought it?

Indeed. I'm not convinced that's a real news story, or site, though.

Well, a Scottish referendum does seem inevitable and this time, it'll probably be a Yes. Arneb and I had this conversation a year ago. Whether May can delay it until 2019 has yet to be seen - she's certainly going to try. As for Wales, which earlier posts talked about, I think it will stay. They voted Leave (why is beyond me - they have even more to lose than the English) and even the referendum for the devolution they have now was only narrowly won. And Leanne Wood's a nice woman, but she's no Nicola Sturgeon. Northern Ireland - or, as many of my colleagues call it, the north of Ireland - ah, that's an interesting one. Best kept for another post.

An additional touch: Given the certeainty of Brexit and having to juggle economic interests and a great appetite for territory in Gibraltar, the Spanish foreign minister said today that Spain would not veto EU membership of an independent Scotland. Your move, I.M. Mai.

Crap article - Spain hasn't dropped plans to veto Scottish EU membership, those plans have never existed. The Spanish position has always been very clear to anybody paying attention to the noises coming from Spain instead of the anti-independence media - no Scottish veto, and oh, about Gibraltar...

I wouldn't characterize the media I got this information from "anti-independence" :) I just linked to the Guardian article to have something in English.

But whichever way you see it, any hopes that Spain would do England's dirty work for them by keeping out an independent Sotland (hoy, Escocia, manana, Catalunya... ) are certainly weakened now, and that put i.M. Mai in yet another tight spot.

They're actually talking about war with Spain now. I suppose that fits well with the Henry VIII methods they're going to use to put EU stuff into law. At least Scotland was independent in the days of Henry VIII and the armada and suchlike, so going back to those days isn't all bad.

My anti-independence media comment was more about our media over here - including the Guardian - who were using "Spain will veto your EU membership!" as a scaremongering tactic, despite Spain saying repeatedly and clearly that it wouldn't.

The article I originally read also used the word "saber-rattling" to characterize Westminster's reaction. It's rather ugly, really.

The subtext here is that Gibraltar relies on the border crossing into Spain remaining open and free flowing. Spain has been agitating for the UK to give them Gibraltar back for decades. Thousands of British people work in Gibraltar but live in Spain and cross daily, thousands more visit Gibraltar as part of a trip to Spain or go there from the Costas as it is the only place to buy proper sausages and teabags, init. Because it is outside the Schengen area Spain can insist on ID checks etc. and can slow down crossings to glacial speeds very easily. If there is no agreement reached over the crossing then Gibraltar is fucked, regardless of what Tories or the Daily Express want.

After Sturgeon it's lesbians all the way down . . .

Well not anymore, Kezia Dugdale has resigned as Labour leader, leaving a number of candidates none of whom seem more than party functionaries, and co-incidentally none of them are lesbians. Dugdale is apparently quite a nice person but a very shit politician who doesn't get on with Corbyn so Westminster Labour will try to bend the Scottish party to their will again which will fuck them up in Scotland for another few years.

The Scottish labour leadership options have been described as "a veritable who's-that? of Scottish politics".

I'd be interested to hear their explanation for the change.

In 2014 he was telling us that we should stay part of the UK, because he really likes Britain (sorry Balders old chum, lots of us don't!).

He trotted out the usual, easily and often debunked, nonsense about currency, the EU etc too - no doubt as instructed by his friends in the Labour Party. Anyway, good he's finally woken up.
