Here's a tool to find out whom to support during the football World Cup, if your team isn't qualified (IIRC, mine is the only team going). It took a bit of fiddling before they allowed me to support Germany, but tell me where it gets you:

I got Germany also, just answering the questions honestly.

In 2006, my parents got tickets for two first-round matches in the Olympic Stadium of Berlin. My father invited me to Sweden-Praguay, which was reasonably fun (late decider by the Swedes after a hard-fought goalless ninety minutes). Then they both went to watch the goalless draw between Tunisia and Ukraine, which must have been quite the ordeal

The only World Cup match I was ever at was Brazil v Morocco group game at Nantes in 1998. Was excellent to see some of the great Brazil players, such as the proper Ronaldo (as opposed to that diving Portuguese ponce).

Under normal circumstances I'd be unlikely to support Tunisia in any match, but there are extenuating circumstances for one fixture in this World Cup.

And I guess they gave you Tunisia becuae their game is, umm, very physical, right?

Oh yeah, the real Ronaldo. The guy who shattered Germany's attempt at greatness in '02 after we had reached the Final having beaten giants like Saudi Arabia, Cameroon, Paraguay, the USA and South Korea, and not having beaten Ireland. He was cruel, with his babyish smile and rabbit-like front teeth.

Is anyone going? Supposedly visa-free access for all nationalities for about six weeks.

No plans to. I have neither the time nor the money. Nor, for that matter, sufficient interest.

The visa is normally a royal pain in the arse (for me as well!), so here’s an opportunity to avoid that unpleasantness.

I got Germany too. How come none of the questions had an [I Don't Care] button?

I got Costa Rica, as well. My guess is that the tipping point is the Goal! versus ¡Gooooooooooooool! I was hoping it was a level-of-head-explodieness instead of an English versus Spanish thing. I haven't watched enough soccer to know if there are any English-speaking announcer equivalent to Gus Johnson (Edit: I just found out that he will be calling select World Cup games for Fox Sports here in the US! - here's a call of his from an FA Cup match)

Australia and Panama also had the same number of matches, but in the end, I'll probably cheer on any of the Central American teams.

Well, why did _I_ take it? Determine that answer to that and you will have the answer to your question.

Spoiler:
HINT: I have no idea why I took it.

Heid and Lianachan go head to head this weekend, as I Can't Believe It's Not Rangers host Ross County.

Spoiler:
Comfortable home win.

On the evidence of the last two games it should be a comfortable home win, on the basis of the two before that more like an away win.

Must have been my engaging and persuasive posting style and general personality.

Meanwhile, Hertha's abominable European tour of 2017 comse to a tottering close with a bloodless 1 - 1 against Östersunds BK, of Swedish fame. Östersund win the group, Hertha add being one of the first two German teams (with Hoffenheim) to finish last in a Euroleague group to their long list of ignominies.

This makes our count look rather artfully balanced:
Played 90, won 36, drawn 18, lost 36.

SpVgg Greuther Fürth 1 - 0 FC Heidenheim

A rare treat for us. Still in a relegation place (17th) but within striking distance of the teams above.

Well done Fuerth, depending on the weather I may not be able to watch Hertha tomorrow. If it’s snowing I’m hunkering down and I’ll see it all, if clear I’m off to Dumfries and might just catch the last half hour.
