Flags

Postby Enzo » Mon Jun 11, 2018 10:18 am

I remember when Canada adopted the maple leaf flag, 1965 I think. I have been watching a bunch of WW2 stuff lately, just watched a lengthy D-Day show. I notice the old 48 star US flag in all the films.

But I also recall when both Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959. I grew up with 48 stars, but Alaska became the 49th state in 1959, and we got a new 49 star flag. it only lasted one year as the Hawaii statehood gave us a 50 star flag a year later.

And yes, there is a 51 star flag ready in case we need it.

For Puerto Rico when it gets statehood? Or would that mean Trump would have to accept it as part of the US and therefore need help?

Well how about that. It had been the maple leaf for as long as I remember, so I just assumed it was always like that.

Another misconception cleared up. For some reason, I thought the new flag took effect on July 4th, and that both Alaska and Hawaii were in before July 4th, 1959, so it went straight form 48 to 50. But this is not correct.

Yes, but is there a 52-star one, in case Iraq and Afghanistan are admitted simultaneously?

Some people are having a lot of fun trying to cram more stars into the canton:

Both Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, but Hawaii was in August, Alaska had been since early in the year.

The flag is one of the anachronisms I watch for in movies.

Officially, the union jack was still our flag til '65. However, the Canadian red ensign was used as an unofficial distinctly Canadian flag since the 1890's.

I'm hoping the 51st star doesn't turn out to be a little maple leaf.

Don't worry, they won't take you. You don't hate Mexico, you don't like violence and guns, and you're stealing that Stanley Cup of theirs all the time.

Yep, all that and, to boot, we're a bunch of commies. ;)

(P.S., not sure if you were joking about Lord Stanley's Cup, as it was originally, exclusively, ours, and the loss of 'ownership' is a bit of a sore point with certain factions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Cup )

Well, that is what you egghead commie Canadians, say, but when has it ever mattered in America that something "originally belonged" to someone else? And since when have "facts" ever bothered any right thinking Merkin?
