All that Jazz

Postby Enzo » Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:18 am

SO here at the home we have occasional entertainment. Today we had a jazz band. A 7-piece: two reeds, two horns, guitar, bass, drums.

They played an hour and a half. Hey, whaddaya want for free? Largely classics, Count Basie, predictable Begin the Beguine Artie Shaw. Others.

On the whole they were pretty good, though at one point a couple horn players got lost, and whispered "No, page THREE" was heard.

Sounds fun. The Memsahib sometimes listens to jazz on the radio, often modern stuff, so I usually wait until a minute or two in before I ask "Have they started yet or are they still tuning up?"; a line stolen from the old B&W Bing Crosby film.
Get it up ye.

Could holler 'take five' if they're that confused, I guess. :D

Oh, and just before they started, the leader came over to our table to speak to his wife (sitting next to me) so he could borrow her microfiber cloth to clean his glasses- So I was able to offer him his own microfiber cleaning cloth, with Enzo's face captioned "I can see clearly now!".

I don’t mind some jazz, even some of the stuff that sounds like a normal band falling down the stairs.

I am not a fan of screech and honk jazz. This was traditional big band stuff.

I wondered if they would take on Take Five, but they didn't. I suspect they could handle it. I can play it myself, and I totally lack talent.

Which brings up...

I first heard it on restaurant Muzak, but I have now heard at least THREE versions of Take Five crammed into 4/4. They should be shot.

The thing about yelling 'take five' (instead of freebird) is you can go either way with the joke. If they go to play the song, you can yell "no, I meant you need a break". :D
If they're confused enough to think you meant they should take a break, you can save face by saying you meant they should play the song.
