What planet do I see, high in the sky, at this very moment, maybe 30 degrees from the moon?

Jupiter?

In the middle of the sky. Can’t possibly be Venus.

Probably Jupiter. The only other alternative would be Saturn, which, IIRC, isn't as bright as Jupiter right now.

It!s indeed Jupiter, and Saturn (weaker, distinctly yellow) shouldn't e too far off eirher.
