So much then for the title of this thread, although, 3 1/2 years after the ref is pretty decent.

BoJo says no second British referendum, no second Scottish referendum. I'll be curious to see how that second point will evolve.

I think Labour’s behaviour during indyref is what holed them below the waterline.

And wasn't it justified! I mean, how can you not have a position on THE nationwide issue of the past five years? I read that if you sum up the parties' relative shares of the vote, the anti-Brexit parties had more votes than the pro-Brexit lot (52-48, as it were). Yet by the vagaries of British electoral law and the divide-and-conquer mechanism that it enables, there is BoJo sitting pretty in No. 10 and pretending he has "The People" behind him.

Indeed, although I was meaning “Scottish” labour during the Scottish independence referendum. They’ve vanished almost entirely since then.

They were the only ”No” party with local organisations to mobilise people on the ground and they very obviously took orders from London rather than listen to their constituents. In Fife you’ll hear them referred to as “Red Tories” rather than as Labour.

Delay no more.

The House of Commons just passed the BoJo Brexit deal, and it' 31 Jan, 2020, no ifs, no buts.

Hard, no-deal Brexit is scheduled for Dec. 31, 2020, when the transition agreement runs out and a rrade deal will not have been made - so the ESR win, everyone else loses.

I am afraid this may later be seen as the day when Europe and Britain really started to slide.

I'm trying to understand what this means.

31 Jan, UK has no representation in the European Parliament and other bodies.

Freedom of movement - ends at the end of the month? At which point, visitors and long-term immigrants will have to comply with whatever rules are set up between each member country and the UK?

Freedom of trade - continues until the end of year, unless we have a continuation of the request for extensions, etc., that we've seen for several years. But no-deal very much back on the table.

Free movement of capital and services - do these continue until the end of the year, or end at the end of the month?

Trade with Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland - EU agreements with these countries continue to apply until the end of the year, or they are terminated at the end of the month?

Other relevant items?

So. Time to say good-bye. Brexit has one advantage: No more Nigels Farage soiling the European Parliament, no incompetent, clueless Brexiteers holding up EU negtiations. That is something, but of course, these fucks are are still there, and they won't make life easier for any of us, not for the EU, not for the Divided Kingdom.

I'll open a bottle of Really Good Scotch tonight (I think I have a 21 yo Aberfeldy somewhere) for the memories, even though I am on sick-leave with a flu and Really Shouldn't Drink. Who knows, maybe in 20 years time, with climate change and all that, we can celebrate Bri-Entry with an award-winning bottle of Yorkshire Riesling, now available everywhere duty free, in well-sorted specialty shops.

Indeed, I will be at a wine club event so by eleven I will probably be hammered and howling at the Moon. It is the sort of event where older, rightier people are likely to be so hopefully none will be unwise enough to say anything stupid to me.

Well they might, in twenty years, when more climate change has happend. They are doing Oaky-vanilley 13.5 % Chardonnays, Cabernets and Bourgogne-style Pinot Noirs in Palatinate and Rheingau these days. Even Saale-Unstrut (at 51° N) are becoming drinkeable.

I share that hope. I dare say I also hope that you'll bring the rest of the British Isles with you in that independent, European, forward-looking country, but I'll take in Scotland alone over none of the five any day.

I think we honestly differ on that point. But I do share your anger over the stupidity of the Brexiteers (and, as one might add, the inaction of the proEU lot) in the referendum.

Our everyone's Uschi said today, we have learned that we do have to fight for our EU, otherwise, some day, it won't be there anymore. If the last three years of negotiations have taught us one thing, it's the value of unity.

Well, with the exception of Norn Iron (which only exists due to British imperialism anyway), they voted for Brexit. So it’s fair enough for them, good luck to them. My anger isn’t over their stupidity, it’s because we have to go along with it even though we clearly voted against it. We are a different country, culturally and politically, but that doesn’t matter - we have to do what they want. Fuck it, and them all.

Ok, tschüss dann. 24 min past the hour. We're home alone, all 27 of us. I'll have my Aberfeldy now.

I think I'll lock this thread, with my heavy moderator hand, just because it's so...fucking FINAL. We'll find a new thread to discuss BoJo's follies in the future.

Admins and Moderators can still post to locked threads.

:glp-adminpower:

But I do have one more question that I think is more appropriate here:

What would it take for them to rejoin?

Okay, 2 questions: Now that it's done, can it be undone (as opposed to the aforementioned rejoining)?

1) Application --> negotiation --> treaty signed --> Treaty approved by the EU Parliament and Council on one side, by the Houses of Parliament on the other. Beers all round, except for Nigel and Jakob, they've been naughty.
2) The process is final now. It cannot be undone, the only way back is through the usual application process.
