France’s defensive alignment was buggered by the loss of Ntamack, that was more important than the prop going off. Also why did the French scrum half and captain not have to go off for concussion assessment after head injuries?

Holstein Kiel 1 - 1 SpVgg Greuther Fürth

Not bad given our record of losing the important games against close competitors. Fürth remain in fifth place, but we won't have anything to do with promotion, 8 points below the playoff spot. Meanwhile, two of Hertha's competitprs drew, so we are still in 13th and 6 points above the line.

A win, two draws, and a loss aren't doing anything to bring us up to par again:
Played 147, won 70, drawn 28, lost 49.

Congrats to Scotland for the Concussion Ball upset.

Table points:

England: 13
France: 13
Scotland: 10
Ireland: 9
Wales: 7
Italy: 0

Note that we are at the end of round 4, except that Ireland and Italy haven't played, due to virus concerns. If we assume that Ireland will win that match, they'd be tied with England and France, or slightly ahead (if they get the bonus point).

So the remaining matches are:
Ireland v Italy
Wales v Scotland
Italy v England
France v Ireland

All four remaining matches are potentially important. But, the next match is on Saturday, Scotland and Wales face off. Wales cannot win the tournament under any circumstances. Scotland must win (with or without the bonus point), but even then, their path to victory is rather improbable - England would have to lose to Italy, France would have to lose to Ireland, and Ireland would have to lose to Italy. A draw with Wales with the bonus point could even do it in theory, but then the point differentials on Irelands two matches would matter.

Much more likely is one of France, England, and Ireland. Assuming bonus point victories by both Ireland and England over Italy (which won't take place until the matches are rescheduled), it would all come down to France v Ireland. Ireland victory with bonus point - Ireland win the tournament. Ireland victory without bonus point - Ireland or England win the tournament, depending on the point differentials. How the two teams perform against Italy would be pivotal. Ireland and France draw - England win. France win without bonus point - England win. France win with bonus point - France or England win, depending on point differentials.

Current point differentials are:
England: +15
France: +13
Scotland: +14
Ireland: +5
Wales: +25
Italy: -72

Both Ireland and England still have to play Italy, which is an excellent opportunity to improve the point differential.

France v Ireland now postponed.

So after Wales Scotland this weekend, that means two of the teams (Wales and Scotland) will have completed all five of their matches, two of the teams (England and France) will have completed four of their five matches, and two of the teams (Ireland and Italy) will have completed three of their five matches.

We discussed at the end of last season that I have a soft spot for Union Berlin, the friendly underdog club from some corner of former East Berlin that managed to be promoted, almost by accident, but with a splendidly resilient performance in their playoff against saturated and slow Bundesligist Stuttgart.

Thatsoft spot is hardening quickly. All over the country, large gatherings of people are being called off, entirely appropriately, because of the Corona epidemic. Now due to our federal constitution, public health policy is in the hands of the States, and although the Federal Health Secretary gave a press conference flanked by virologists and public helath experts who said we Really Really Should Avoid large gatherings, the Berlin health secretary, the Köpenick mayor and the club decided not to let next Saturday's match be played in front of empty seats, they decided to go ahead with it. It's the Bundesliga home match against Bayern Munich, and you can't call that off, right? They must have tried to not read the peritinent Robert Koch Institute (our kind-of-like CDC)rcommendations very long and hard. Maybe they held the pages upside down and then decided they contained no useful information.

Fuck you, we're King Football, and it's the long-awaited game against Bayern. We aren' afraid of puny viruses when Big Bayern come along. The baw-clawing shitheads. Fannybaws. Fucknuggets.

I mentioned elsewhere that the NBA indefinitely suspended their season as of last night. Today, the NHL followed suit. There are a couple of semi-major affiliated leagues which have cancelled all remaining games.

In Berlin, meanwhile, someone got a spoonful of sense and made the Bayern match no-crowd.

First case at Real Madrid and, just for completeness, at Hannover 96, a very forgettable second-leaguer here.

I usually have a soft spot for Big Pharma Leverkusen, but hey Rangers, Monsanto them with a big Monsanto-y thing!

For what it's worth, Major League Soccer has also suspended their season. One source said for eight weeks, another source says indefinitely. Most of the remaining basketball and wrestling tournaments at the college level have been cancelled. The NCAA (major college athletics) has suspended all spring athletic events - this mostly affects baseball, softball, and track and field. I can only assume that the NAIA (NCAA for the small schools) will follow suit. The XFL (American football) is going forward, but not allowing public live audiences. Major League Baseball has cancelled the remaining preseason games, and has postponed opening day by two weeks. I imagine this applies to all affiliated minor league teams/leagues as well.

Rangers 1 - 3 Big Pharma

That shows you where the Scottish League stands in terms of Europe.

Played 147, won 70, drawn 27, lost 50.

So, the only remaining Six Nations match that hasn't been postponed is Wales v Scotland.

There is no scenario in which Wales can win the tournament.

Scotland can theoretically win, but it's tough.

Scotland win with bonus point - requires England to do no better than a draw (without the bonus point) against Italy, and France to do no better than a draw (without the bonus point) against Ireland. And it also requires Ireland to do no better than scoring six table points when they play France and Italy. If England lose to Italy with one or no bonus points, and France lose to Ireland with one or no bonus points, and Ireland (who win against France in this scenario) score no bonus point against France and lose to Italy with no bonus points, then Scotland are the winner. In all other sub-cases in this scenario, it would come down to the point differentials.

Scotland win without bonus point - requires England to lose against Italy (and do no better than one of the two bonus points), and France to lose against Ireland (and also do no better than one bonus point). Also requires Ireland to score no more than five points in their two matches against France and Italy, and they must win against France in this scenario. If England lose to Italy with no bonus points, France lose to Ireland with no bonus points, Ireland win no bonus point against France, and Ireland lose to Italy with no bonus points, then Scotland are the winner. In all other sub-cases in this scenario, it would come down to the point differentials.

Scotland draw with bonus point - requires England to lose to Italy with no bonus point, France to lose to Ireland with no bonus point, Ireland to win against France with no bonus point, and Ireland to lose to Italy with no bonus point. It then comes down to the point differential, which remains at +14 for Scotland, since in this scenario, they draw. England must lost to Italy and not score the bonus point in this scenario, so their point differential will be at most +7, and France lose to Ireland with no bonus point, so their point differential will be at most +5. So Scotland (in this scenario) would beat both of them on point differential, but they most also beat Ireland, currently at +5. So the Irish victory over France (again, in this scenario) can't be too strong, relative to their loss to Italy.

Scotland draw without bonus point, or lose - Scotland does not win the tournament.

So there are scenarios in which Scotland win, but they are not very likely - if England win against Italy, that, all by itself, knocks Scotland out. If Ireland win against Italy, then the only possible scenarios in which Scotland can win require Ireland and France to draw - neither team can win! So a Scottish victory in the tournament is theoretically possible, but not likely. Tomorrow's match is a matter of keeping an extremely slim hope alive.

In all other cases, it is a three horse race, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Ireland can achieve the highest number of table points (19) by winning both matches against Italy and France, and scoring both bonus points. If they do that, they win the tournament. However, I think England is probably In a better position, because they only have to play Italy, and can (with high probability) score 18 table points. There is a good chance Ireland will not defeat France, or will not score both bonus points. So I think England is in the best position, then Ireland, then France, then Scotland.

Although I'd venture that Leverkusen, on a good day, are an extremely capable team. They were relegated from CL in autumn, and in the Bundesliga, they are en route for direct CL qualification, coming from behind. So losing to them is maybe not a testament to weakness.

Meanwhile, Hertha and Greuther won't be able to drag our count down, as the German Football League has suspended both competitions until further notice.

The XFL has cancelled the remainder of their season. The ATP has suspended their events until April 20th. The PGA cancelled the last three rounds of the current event (The Players, I think?), but I haven't heard what they plan to do with future events. NASCAR is, as far as I know, still planning on racing this weekend in Atlanta without spectators present. It looks like Formula 1 is pushing back the start of their season to the end of May or so.

Edit: Just saw that NASCAR is postponing this weekend's race as well as next weekend's.

I and a few other local guys like to get together a couple of times a week in the elementary school gym and play some pick-up basketball. The school district just announced that there will be no public access to any part of the schools beyond the front offices, so it looks like we're also on hiatus.
