Voodoo was shorthand for miracles, trans-substantiation etc. Yes, we have to pay to protect any world leader, but other world leaders represent trade partners etc. who benefit the whole country; and other world leaders do not try to persuade me to change my lifestyle to marginalise the GLBT communit...

And we get to pay . . .

An old man who believes in discrimination, voodoo and has an imaginary friend is invited to visit the UK and it will cost the UK taxpayer £20 million or so.

Apparently there are no plans to ask his kiddie-fiddler friendly organisation to pay for any of it,

In Method of Calculation : According to Saich (2000, p.209) moreover, cultural globalization mostly refers to the domination of U.S. cultural products. Arguably, the United States is the trend-setter in much of the global socio-cultural realm (see Rosendorf, 2000, p.111). As an additional proxy for...

I'm curious how they came to this: but my first thought was that 3 of the top 4 don't have their own language.

My second thought was that although I like Austrians I find them very parochial and insular.

My guess would be that anything squaddies were involved in would involve alcohol, violence and entreprenuers in varying quantities; and wouldn't take place in the nice areas of the city.

CRAFT days . .

I work in a smallish town, the sort of place where everyone knows everyone and most people live and die without ever moving more than 20 miles away. Edinburgh is visible from here but a foreign country. It is similar to the town I grew up in so I like it. It is a town built on mining and heavy indus...

RIP Bill McLaren

Bill McLaren was the BBC rugby commentator for decades and although a proud scot, he was always completely impartial when commentating. He was also a PE teacher and introduced generations of boys to the game.

This seems to be my week for updating old threads: Susan Boyle has sorted herself out/been sorted out and has shifted 8 million albums in 2 months; huge numbers these days. Completely ignored for awards of course but the public (and her record company) love her.

Some Euroweasels I have known have expressed surprise at the "inflation" of swearing in North America. But I haven't noticed that European books/films are particularly prudish in this regard. Maybe my Euroweasel friends had just seen Pulp Fiction :P It tends to be surprise that swearing i...

Glancing through the definitions I came accross these gems:

Selectee - a person selected for selectee screening . . .

Selectee Screening - A special screening requirement for individuals designated as selectees.

And way too many TLAs.

There was a case in the UK recently where two female police officers who jobshared looked after each others children on their days off. The powers that be charged one of them but the case is going nowhere and the guidelines are being changed.
