What the hell is a spambot anyway?

Posting this will surely tax my intelligence, just as surely as working to pay taxes will allow me to pay more taxes.

In the internet forums, you often see something like 25 members online and 15 guests. I think most of those guests are robots. Places like google have software bits that go and search places for content. SO if you see a google refernce to something you are looking for and among the returns is your own post on some forum, it was a robot that found that link.

Surely they (or their authors) can be put to a higher use and sent packing. I was wondering about their possible application in analysing spatial distribution earthquake data of the sort that gets displayed here (instead of having someone laboriously duplicate assessment of the data) just to test a hypothesis about the interrelationship of particles under friction or tension/compression, whichever you prefer:
