Excellent idea.

In front of the old Federal Chancellors Office in Bonn (Two Large Forms):

The drab rusty building in the background is the one from which Germany was governed in the last 20 years before unification and some years beyond. Talk about modesty.

One of his sculptures (Large Butterfly) in front of one of the most beautiful postwar buildings in my native West Berlin - the Congress Hall, a gift from America on the occasion of the International Architecture Exhibition in 1958. The driving force behind the construction was Eleanor Dulles, the wife of then Secretary of State John Foster Dulles:

For a child of West Germany, Henry Moore means a lot.

The Archer is a 2.5 tonne bronze free-form statue that rests on a concrete base, surrounded by a floor of concrete embedded with stones.

For which $100,000 was paid in 1966. Real money back then. For that lump of slag. That sits as a showpiece outside Toronto City Hall.

I shut up now.

But it's beautiful. I'd say it is and was worth every cent, and you needn't shut up at all.

They look very organic and erotic to me. And I barely know how to SPELL "art".

A brief history - I suspect you are missing one element of this story.

Our metallic friend made this post. I read the post shortly thereafter.

A while later, my lunch group, in its usual disorganized and chaotic fashion, went marching down the street in a random direction before any decision about where to go had been made. At some point, it was necessary to stop, and discuss strategy. The group stopped in front of the sculpture whose photo appears in the initial post of this thread. While they debated the important and weighty question of where to eat lunch, I walked over to the sign by the sculpture, to see what it was. It was a Henry Moore. Having recently read KLA2's post, I snapped a photo, and posted it here.

So I suspect KLA2 is regretting ever having brought up the topic.

Thanks for the background. I AM one of KLA2's pet peeves, then.

Mactep, I am always happy if I can start a good discussion on this board. (In this case, I guess I get the assist).

Art, for better or worse, is whatever people choose to call “art”.

Arneb, you do not peeve me (much  ) by liking Henry Moore’s work. It does peeve me if I have to pretend that I admire it or, worse still, pay for it as a taxpayer.

I cannot help but think that Mr. Moore was laughing at us … all the way to the bank.

If you're pretending that you admire it, you're not doing a very good job :P

It's all part and parcel of that whole mixed capitalist/socialist thing - sometimes you end up paying for things you don't like.

The one I photographed was apparently commissioned by OCBC bank, and I am not a customer. However, given the rather cozy relationship between business and government here, I hesitate to declare that I therefore did not, or will not, be paying for it . . .

Hey, folks, keep the images (and dialogue) coming. At least the one with a hole in (her?) head on Synagogue Street has tits. I think. :? {But what the hell is that crawling away fom (towards :shock:) "her"}

Still, better than "The Archer".
