But ironically, he wasn't doing anything dangerous at the time. They were filming for his daughter's new kid's show "Jungle Kids".

(my bold)

That may qualify for the famous last words thread. :D I didn't hear what he was doing but it did strike me he wasn't dealing with the creatures he knew best. He was a good bloke who did a lot to explain and popularise a number of things.

Bold mine. I'm kind of thinking that by definition it's dangerous when it gets you killed :P But of course, by that definition, everything is dangerous. Perhaps it really was a relatively low danger activity, coupled with some bad luck, I don't know. . .

Apparently, there have been only one or two deaths by stingray in Austrailia ever, before this. So even stupid people don't get killed this way.

I used to gig (spear) stingrays in Florida (here) when I was a teenager.

The latest I heard is that the barb went into his heart which is why he died, instead of it sticking in his chest and the toxins being a bit unpleasant. Simple bad luck.

Probably not for a while... Every bit of footage that never made it to air will be dug out, re-edited and capitalized on. Watch for "Crocodile Hunter - The Untold Stories" coming to an Animal Planet near you soon.

According to his producer/director/friend, John Stainton, he was never conscious after the incident.

<speculation>

So in order for them to know exactly what happened, it must have been witnessed. I have a sneaking suspicion that the entire ordeal was filmed. The camera man probably didn't realize what was going on until after it was over.

While offered as speculation, you're probably right Lance. I wondered how they knew myself.

I figured the 'Crocodile Hunter' would "buy the farm" sooner or later, but not this way. I think it's ironic it came at the hands (OK, tail) of a rather non-aggressive animal. Go figure.

My condolences to his family and fans for their loss.

According to CNN this morning, this is confirmed.

Heh, you know the guy was famous when he was incorporated into the early steps of my plan to take over the world.

I was going to kidnap him and fly him to the North Pole, where he would wrangle me a polar bear that he would set loose on a UN meeting. That would allow me to use the shock time afterwards to put in place some other tactics that would get my people into power. Then we'd move on from there until we eventually got to the moon and set up a Mars colony...

Now I've gotta come up with a whole new "take power" scheme... My entire plan hinged on the guy...

I heard he was conscious long enough to pull the spike out but passed out a moment later.

I'll miss the guy, even if he was over the top.

The majority of people seem to mourn his death, and also recount that in life, he's done a lot for nature preserves and such, donating all the money he made into protecting wildlife.

A minority, however, seem to be insinuating that he somehow "deserved" to die, and that he had it coming (even though the stingray thing was a freak accident...)

The stingray was even called a "dangerous animal", and that he should have known better. HAH!

There seem to be a handful of mean-spirited folks over there who either think Irwin was either not much of a naturalist or got what he deserved. It sure has changed over there and I was happy to see R.A.F. take the meanies to task.

Not to paint with too broad a brush, I'm really turned off by the rather arrogant, self-congratulatory tone I often find at BAUT, for being just ever-so rational. This rings a bit hollow with me, as in certain fields in which I have quite a bit of knowledge, it's a rare day when someone at BAUT with absolutely no knowledge of the subject matter will not gleefully declaim his knowledge and expertise in it, and show nothing but contempt for anyone how actually does know something. I guess it's only called being a woo-woo when the subject matter is physics or astronomy or something like that. . .
