John Updike R.I.P.

Postby Arneb » Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:01 pm

One of the giants of American literature, John Updike, diedof lung cancer today, aged 76.

He had long been touted for a Nobel prize for a long time, but one member of the Swedish Academy made it clear - perhaps unintentionally candidly - that there would be no Nobel for Literature for an American as long as George W. was President. Fuck the bastards. For FAZ, he is now one of "the classics without a Nobel". His memory will live with that, easily.

A memorable, and somewhat appropos quote,

"Suspect each moment, for it is a thief, tiptoeing away with more than it brings." ("A Month of Sundays")

No, those were bunnies and that was Hugh Hefner.

John Updike wrote about northern Holland.
