Postby Мастер » Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:12 am

At the age of 92, Vera Lynn edges out the Beatles to take the #1 spot on the UK charts.

"We'll meet again" was quite appropriately played at the end of Dr. Strangelove, over a montage of nuclear bombs going off.

I was going to post this but thought no-one would know who she is.

For those that don't she is the iconic singer from the dark years of 1940-42; while Churchill was the voice of defiance she was the voice of hope and for my parents' generation she gave the belief that it would all turn out all right. She was tireless and fearless in touring and gave many concerts for the troops, even going to India and Burma. My dad who was a gruff, cynical veteran would get misty eyed when her songs were played.

Her name is also rhyming slang for that well know clear alcoholic drink, often served with supersonic. :D

You're right, Heid. I, at least, had no idea who she was, but now I do. Kudos to her.

Good finds Arneb, my father would of course have muttered about trite sentimentality before realising he had something in his eye and then suddenly remembering something he had to do in the garden. :D

Vera launched the poppy appeal this year. I bought mine at the railway station this morning.

Sadly, I'm so Americanized, that I had her confused w/Vera-Ellen, so I read up on Vera Lynn. Neat lady.
