Despite the fact that I'm a late-model Gen Xer, I really didn't have access to cable television until I went to college in the mid-90s. As luck would have it, that corresponded with the premier of Babylon 5. Despite questionable acting and the egregious over-use of CGI, I really enjoyed the way that all of the episodes were tied together into a coherent over-arching story. I'm sure most of you are familiar with it. And so, I was saddened to have learned of the passing of Mira Furlan, the actress that played Mmbari Ambassador Satai Delenn. However, I've also learned that her life was very interesting. She was born in what was then Yugoslavia; her mother was Jewish and Croatian and her father was Slovene-Croat. She was involved in the Yugoslav feminist movement during the 80s, and in the early 90s, spent a great deal of time traveling between Zagreb and Belgrade as stage actor in both cities. When the Serbian-Croatian conflict erupted in 1991, she was eventually forced to flee with her husband, a Serbian. Furlan was 65.
