Neanderthal Thinking

US president Joseph Biden criticised Texas’s decision to relax restrictions on mask-wearing, calling it “Neanderthal thinking”.

The president’s statement was sharply criticised by many prominent politicians and civil rights activists across the spectrum.

Neanderthal rights activist Nina Oukrachaka told a CNN reporter, “It is truly disturbing to hear such undisguised racist and specist language from one of the leading politicians from a party that supposedly prides itself on its progressive ideals. Such statements reinforce and perpetuate negative stereotypes of Neanderthal people, some of whom supported the Biden/Harris ticket in 2020. They are feeling betrayed.”

The National Association for the Advancement of Neanderthal Peoples (NAANP) released a statement calling on Biden to apologise immediately. A spokesperson said, “those of us involved in the long struggle for Neanderthal rights never imagined that in 2021, using the word ‘Neanderthal’ as an insult would still be acceptable in political discourse. It should be as unacceptable as using *****, *****, *****, *****, and *****.” The NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the Log Cabin Republicans all immediately demanded an apology from the NAANP spokesperson.

Former US president Donald Trump, in the inaugural post on the new social media network, TrumpWorld, said, “well the thing is, what you need to understand is, they’re neanderthals, so they do the things Neanderthals do. If the weren’t Neanderthals, they’d be something else, and we’d be calling them something else instead of Neanderthals”.

Dr Anthony Fauci of the CDC criticised President Biden’s statement as premature and not based on established science. “There is no clinical evidence that Neanderthals are less likely than non-Neanderthals to wear masks. Important public policy decisions should be based on facts and evidence, not unfounded prejudice.”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz called Biden’s statement a “typical example of the Democrats’ hypocritical disdain towards Neanderthals.” He continued, “the Democrats have been in power for 28 years now, first it was Clinton, then it was Obama, and then Biden. What have they done for Neanderthals? Nothing!” Cruz called on all Neanderthals to support the Cruz for President 2024 campaign.

With the political climate here in the USA, I would not be surprised if this “controversy” actually broke out.

Politics: so simple, a caveman could do it.

[archaeologist mode]Neanderthals are much maligned, largely as a result of out of date thinking from an ultimately racist and long discounted theory.[/archaeologist mode]
