LMAO

This one is a few years old, but I just came across it.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50666436

So a Russian people-smuggler took 10,000 Euros each from four south Asians in Russia (illegally, apparently), to smuggle them into Finland.

So he constructed a fake border crossing, took them across, took their money, and left them wandering about in the woods, in what was still Russia.

The four were eventually caught by the real Russian border guards, charged with some sort of immigration offence, and ordered deported.

The people-smuggler has been charged with fraud.

I wonder whether the four south Asians have any basis to get their money back? IANAL, but I understand in common law countries, you cannot sue to recover damages due to an illegal transaction. But I'm not sure how it works in Russia. Obviously they did not get what they paid for.
