As a musician, I've always tended to HATE songs about "The Road" and the whining we do when it comes to traveling all day to play a gig in front of ten people who could care less if you're there or not. However, this one hit home the first time I heard it and I still like it. Kind of different from the "party party party" mode that ACDC takes in the song above.

Estimated time of arrival 9.30 a.m.
Been up before the sun and now I'm tired before I even begin.
(Now you're flying) I got so much work in front of me,
(Really flying) it stretches out far as the eye can see.
I can see.
Spend half my life in airports doing crosswords and attempting to sleep,
And when the bar is open then you'll often find me warming a seat.
(Now you're flying) I never find a place where I can stay
(Really flying) I'd rather be a thousand miles away.
Thousand miles away.
Working for yourself sometimes ain't all that it's cracked up to be.
It can be as lonely at the top as at the bottom of that corporate tree
(Now you're flying) I'm told I'm going places - who can say ?
(Really flying) I might arrive but I'll be gone the very next day.
I must be on my way
A thousand miles away.
Promised to myself someday I'd take the time and try to make sense
Out of all those opportunities I've lost from trying to sit on the fence
(Now you're flying) But right now I've got no time for yesterday
(Really flying) Yesterday's a thousand miles away.
A thousand miles away.
What was that that you were trying to say ?
I guess I was a thousand miles away.
Sing it again.

My favorite, penned in 1967, not just for musicians. I always thought of soldiers leaving for Vietnam. Another age, another war.

All my bags are packed
Im ready to go
Im standin here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin
Its early morn
The taxis waitin
Hes blowin his horn
Already Im so lonesome
I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that youll wait for me
Hold me like youll never let me go
cause Im leavin on a jet plane
Dont know when Ill be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Theres so many times Ive let you down
So many times Ive played around
I tell you now, they dont mean a thing
Evry place I go, Ill think of you
Evry song I sing, Ill sing for you
When I come back, Ill bring your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that youll wait for me
Hold me like youll never let me go
cause Im leavin on a jet plane
Dont know when Ill be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time
Let me kiss you
Then close your eyes
Ill be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I wont have to leave alone
About the times, I wont have to say

Oh, kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that youll wait for me
Hold me like youll never let me go
cause Im leavin on a jet plane
Dont know when Ill be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

But, Im leavin on a jet plane
Dont know when Ill be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane,
Ain't got time to take a fast train.
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby just a-wrote me a letter.

I don't care how much money I gotta spend,
Got to get back to my baby again
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby just a-wrote me a letter.

Well, she wrote me a letter
Said she couldn't live without me no mo'.
Listen mister can't you see I got to get back
To my baby once a-mo'--anyway...

Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane,
Ain't got time to take a fast train.
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby just a-wrote me a letter.

Well, she wrote me a letter
Said she couldn't live without me no mo'.
Listen mister can't you see I got to get back
To my baby once a-mo'--anyway...

Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane,
Ain't got time to take a fast train.
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby just a-wrote me a letter.
Because my baby just a-wrote me a letter.

In the early morning rain
With a dollar in my hand
With an achin in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
Im a long way from home
And I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain
With no place to go
Out on runway number nine
Big seven-o-seven set to go
But Im stuck here in the grass
Where the cold wind blows
Now the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
Well there she goes my friend
Well shes rollin down at last

Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver bird on high
Shes away and westward bound
Far above the clouds shell fly
Where the mornin rain dont fall
And the sun always shines
Shell be flyin oer my home
In about three hours time

This old airports got me down
Its no earthly good to me
cause Im stuck here on the ground
As cold and drunk as I can be
You cant jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So Id best be on my way
In the early morning rain
You cant jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So Id best be on my way
In the early morning rain

Über den Wolken muß die Freiheit wohl grenzenlos sein
Alle Ängste, alle Sorgen, sagt man,
Blieben darunter verborgen, und dann
Wäre was uns groß und wichtig erscheint
Nur noch nichtig und klein.

Reinhard Mey

Quick&Dirty translation:
"Above the clouds, freedeom must be limitless
All fears, all sorrows, they say
Remain hidden below, and then
Everything that seemed big and important to us
Would be trifling and small"

Kitschy video, with a few nice pictures of my home town in the 80s.

The parodies are right beside the clip... :D

Jumpin' Jack Flash

I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But its all right now, in fact, its a gas!
But its all right. Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

I was raised by a toothless, bearded hag,
I was schooled with a strap right across my back,
But its all right now, in fact, its a gas!
But its all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead.
I fell down to my feet and I saw they bled.
I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.
But its all right now, in fact, its a gas!
But its all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash

Oh when the sun goes down and the moon comes up
I turn into a teenage goo-goo muck
Yeah I cruise through the city and I roam the streets
Lookin for something that is nice to eat
You better duck, when I show up, the goo-goo muck.

I'm a night headhunter looking for some head
With a way-out body underneath that head
Yeah I'll get you baby with a little luck
Cuz I'm a teenage tiger and an goo-goo muck
You better duck, when I show up, the goo-goo muck.

The city is a jungle and I'm a beast
I'm a teenage tiger looking for a feast
Yeah I wan't the most but I'll take the least
Cuz I'm a goo-goo muck tiger and a teenage beast
You better duck, when I show up, the goo-goo muck.

Bottle of Wine
Words and Music by Tom Paxton

[Cho:]
Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine,
When you gonna let me get sober?
Leave me alone, let me go home.
Let me go back and start over.

Ramblin' around this dirty old town,
Singin' for nickels and dimes.
Times getting tough I ain't got enough,
To buy a little bottle of wine.

[Cho:]

Little hotel, older than Hell,
Dark as the coal in the mine.
Blanket so thin, I lay there and grin,
'Cause I got a little bottle of wine.

[Cho:]
It's a pain in my head, bugs in my bed,
And my pants are so old that they shine.
Out on the street, tell the people I meet,
To buy me a bottle of wine.

[Cho:]

A preacher will preach, and a teacher will teach,
And a miner will dig in the mine.
I ride the rods, trusting in God,
And huggin' my bottle of wine.

[Cho:]

Whiskey gin and brandy
With a glass I'm pretty handy
Tryin' to walk a straight line
On sour mash and cheap wine
So join me for a drink boys
We're gonna mke a big noise
so don't worry 'bout tomorrow
Take it today
forget about the check
We'll get hell to pay
Have a drink on me...

He was selling postcards from a paper stand
a whiskey bottle in his withered hand
he put a finger on a photo from an old magazine
and saw himself in the shadow of his dream

They found him with his head inside a tin-pot crown
told him his feet stank and took him downtown
called him agitator, spy and thief
shut him up in solitary third degree
take a long line, reel him in

He tried to appeal to the king of might
he said "I'm just excercising my sacred right"
the king he said "You ain't got no rights
you're a madman, a traitor, get outta my sight"
take along line, reel him in

They put him aboard a well wound whirlwind
pulled out his teeth and rold him to grin
he gave them a smile, pulled out a bottle of wine
and said "I never existed, you've been wasting your time"
take a long line, reel him in

(C) Oh the neon lights were flashing
And the (F) icy wind did (C) blow
The water (Em) seeped in(Am)to his (Am/G) shoes
And the (F) drizzle turned to (C) snow
His (F) eyes were red, his (C) hopes were dead
And the (Am) wine was running (E) low
And the (F) old man came (G) home from the (C) forest
His tears fell on the sidewalk as he stumbled in the street
A dozen faces stopped to stare but no one stopped to speak
For his castle was a hallway and the bottle was his friend
And the old man stumbled in from the forest

Up a dark and dingy staircase the old man made his way
His ragged coat around him as upon his cot he lay
And he wondered how it happened that he ended up this way
Getting lost like a fool in the forest

And as he lay there sleeping a vision did appear
Upon his mantle shining a face of one so dear
Who had loved him in the springtime of a long forgotten year
When the wildflowers did bloom in the forest

She touched his grizzled fingers and she called him by his name
And then he heard the joyful sound of children at their games
In an old house on a hillside in some forgotten town
Where the river runs down from the forest

With a mighty roar the big jets soar above the canyon streets
And the con men con but life goes on for the city never sleeps
And to an old forgotten soldier the dawn will come no more
For the old man has come home from the forest

- Gordon Lightfoot

Somewhere a clock strikes midnight
And there's a full moon in the sky
You hear a dog bark in the distance
You hear someone's baby cry
A rat runs down the alley
And a chill runs down your spine
And Someone walks across your grave
And you wish the sun would shine
Cause No one's gonna warn you
And no one's gonna yell 'Attack'
And you don't feel the steel
Till it's hanging out your back

Aha! You want arcane connections? Not good to play with a musician, you know ...

From Major Tom to Johnny Thunders - spot the connection (an easy one with the clue in plain sight).

I am sure someone else here can solve this conundrum. :?

Thought you'd appreciate that one, KLA2!

Here's the hint: From Major Tom to Johnny Thunders - spot the connection

Solution: Heroin

Not really song titles, but another game we'd play in the van, in the studio, etc.

Waitaminit ... are you saying Major Tom was about heroin? I thought it was about astronauts.

{Or are you talking of Bowie himself, who I suspect rode the white horse more than The Lone Ranger. :lol: }

Next, you'll be telling us Puff the Magic Dragon was about opium ...

{Peter Yarrow always denied this, and I believe him.}

Eh - I was actually thinking of the song "Ashes To Ashes" and the specific line "We know Major Tom's a junkie" which would have led you right to the Johnny Thunders link.

But since you didn't know Thunders ... well ... sorry!

Let's get back to the original game, shall we?

Heroin - The Velvet Underground

I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know
I have made the big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death
And you can't help me now, you guys
And all you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know
I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town
And of himself, and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off and dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jim's in this town
And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds
'Cause when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don't care anymore
Ah, when the heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I'm as good as dead
Then thank your God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
And I guess I just don't know
And I guess I just don't know
Is there such a thing?
