Netherlands vs. Austria, there's the perfect example of what we call an aversion-aversion conflict (at least for me).

I wouldn’t write off schland! quite yet.

My second name iss Kassandra, didn't you know that?

Yes, difficult to muster much enthusiasm for Austria I must admit. My son was asking me how I could prefer Austria to the Netherlands, what with Hitler and all that. Best I could come up with was errr.. Mozart?

Richard A wrote:Mind you, most Englishmen completely fail to get this - and a lot else. A friend moved to Glasgow many years ago - in fact, Arneb and I, with our respective future spouses, met up with him there - but that’s another story. He told me that he was asked what team he supported. So being a good South London lad, he replied, “Crystal Palace”. The guy looked at him and thought, “stupid Englishman”. So he tried again. “Aye but what team do you support?” Martin now worked out what he actually meant, but had no time for it. So as his then girlfriend was from Airdrie, he said, “Hamilton Athletic”. Now the guy got really frustrated. “BUT WHAT TEAM DO YOU SUPPORT???” I got off more lightly when, also in Glasgow, I said, “I know who the Oranges are and I know who the Greens are, but who the hell are the Blues?” Apologies to Heid!

Yes, or "what school did you go to?" which is trying to find out precisely the same thing. I don't think you'd encouter this anywhere outside the greater Glasgow area, certainly not up here. I don't know how prevalent it is in the central belt more generally.

West of Scotland only, not really a thing in the east. Some parts of Fife used to be bad as miners had moved from the West to here but it isn't a thing any more.

Good ski-ing. The Mem used to work with Germans who described it as "Germany's ski resort". Good beer and surprisingly good wine. I quite like Austria but quite like Cloggistan as well.

So, on balance it seems Scotland would probably have won if they had anybody who could score goals and were the better team. Richard may have a different view....

How do we score this for our tally? Neither Heid nor I follow Scotland, but a Richard draw?

Anyway:

Sweden 1 - 0 Slovakia
Croatia 1 - 1 Czech Republic
Brexitistan 0 - 0 Scotland

Delighted to see racist English twitter complaining about not beating the 3rd lowest ranked team in the competition.

My view was that last night was a lot better a game than some I’ve seen. Obviously I’d have liked a win, but at least it wasn’t as boring as the score suggested.

Germany’s goal just now disallowed - shame!

Was a fine game. I’d been expecting to lose 2-0. Our media is of course now talking about how we’ll be playing Netherlands in Hungary in the next round. Never mind the small matter of beating World Cup runners-up, Croatia first.

After that, then DDD’s prancing pony scoring I feared the worst.

Good to see Germany up 4-1. Portugal’s 2nd goal a reminder not to get complacent, but if Germany make sure they defend well, this should still be a good result.

Thank you, fat lady!

Portugal 2 - 4 'Schland

OK OK fine! I was to quick to write them off. But now we have to beat Hungary first...

Played 184, won 92, drawn 40, lost 52. Fifty percent!

Spain are nothing like the team they were a few tournaments ago.

Today:

Hungary 1 - 1 France
DDD 2 - 4 ‘Schland!
Spain 1 - 1 Poland

Tomorrow, start of the last group games and of simultaneous matches.

17:00 Italy v Wales (yes, Italy, I know, sorry)
17:00 Switzerland v Turkey

So you should be! And that win should have given the German team the confidence they need to give everything they've got in the Hungary game.

20:00 Russia v Denmark

GROUP C

17:00 North Macedonia v Netherlands
17:00 Ukraine v Austria

A North Macedonia win against the Netherlands would be quite the thing, but I am not putting my money on them...

I don't care much for Swisss football, but I am somewhat disappointed with the Turkish performance. Zero points, 1 - 8 goals in a group with Wales and Switzerland? That seems like it wasn't really necessary.

Italy are positivley frightening this season. They didn't have any really strong opposition (Wales, if any) but gaining 9 pts., going 7 - 0, winning handily against Wales with your substitute bench... Wow.

No, I'm not putting money on North Macedonia either. Italy are indeed impressive, but we knew they would be. But as Arneb says, who'd have thought that it would be Wales that came 2nd.

I may watch whichever Group C match is showing. Group B may be a bit late - I've had a sharp reminder today that there are other things besides covid out there and it's a school night.

GROUP C

North Macedonia 0 - 3 Netherlands
Ukraine 0 - 1 Austria

GROUP B

Finland 0 - 2 Belgium
Russia 1 - 4 Denmark

Belgium and Denmark wins should mean Scotland will qualify for the next round as one of the best 3rd place finishers if, and it’s a HUGE if, they beat Croatia. If Czech Republic beat England and Scotland win, and the results are enough to reverse a 3 goal difference England advantage, then Scotland to through in 2nd place, and England almost certainly go through as a best 3rd places. This, of course, would be my preferred scenario, despite there being more chance of Elvis riding in to the stadium on Shergar than that combination occurring.

Not long to wait to find out. Tomorrow:

GROUP D

20:00 Croatia v Scotland
20:00 Czech Republic v England

Billy Gilmour presumably wasn't near any other players on the pitch, cycled back on his own from the match, didn't celebrate getting MOTM on his first starting appearance, ate alone, wasn't in the hotel, etc... Entirely, er, plausible.

I found England a bit disappointing, especially given that the Czechs were a rather weak opposition.
Our TV did not carry the Scotland game, but my, that Modric guy really still has it.

No effect on the count as per our Scottish members' request.

'Schland tonight, do or die. We have a Hungarian house officer, and she is quite low-key these days. But let's see what happens when they beat us - which of course will never happen, we know from that South Korea game right?

Just for kicks, here is a rundown of how the evening can turn out:

If Germany win against Hungary, we will reach the round of last 16...
- as group winner if Portugal win against France or if there is draw between them. That would pit us against Switzerland, Ukraine, or Finland in Bukarest next Monday
- as second in the group if France beat Portugal - That would pit us against England, in Wembley, next Tuesday

If Germany draw against Hungary, we will reach the round of last 16...
- as second in the group if France win against Portugal or if there is a draw between them. That would pit us against England, in Wembley, next Tuesday
- as third in the group if Portugal win against France. That would pit us against either Belgium or the Netherlands next Sunday, in Budapest or Seville.

If Germany lose against Hungary, we'll be last in the group and crash out of the tournament.we will...
- reach the round of last sixteen as third in the group if France win against Portugal, and IF the loss does not turn our + 1 GD into -1 or worse, or if some funny thing happens re. the fair play evaluation. Hazy on that. That would pit us against either Belgium or the Netherlands next Sunday, in Budapest or Seville.
- finish last in the group and crash out of the tournament if Portugal win against France or if there is a draw between them.
