King Billy’s boys beaten by the Czechs, and deservedly so. Great to see. Hopefully DDD due an old fashioned thrashing, six of the best, trousers down, next.

Interesting, Lianachan. Any particular reason you're supporting Croatia? I have no strong feelings either way, although I think you're right that Spain will beat them.

For France v Switzerland, again no great feelings, but this surely has to be a rout.

I'm actually supporting Spain, as I used to live there, but will support Croatia against most teams. I also am of the minority view that Croatia may beat Spain this time.

Croatia fans when they played Scotland in 2014:

Come to think of it, I agree Croatia have a good chance against Spain, who are looking a lot more ordinary than on years past. And Croatia didn't reach the World Cup Final for nothing.

I have something of an animus against Spain, who lost their humility somewhat after the 2008-12 magic streak. And although I admire Croatia's staunch refusal to be the underdog, there is an acrid nationalist streak im their patriotism that doesn't sit well with me. Ustaša is big with some of their fans, I read.

The Netherlands, group stage champions and everyone's fvourite fabourite who pack their suitcases early, as always because the team effort isn't right. Man would I bite my pillow if I were Dutch.

It is hard to support Spain in anything these days, after their brutal suppression of Catalan democracy. Croatians, who had to fight for their independence, encouraging Scots simply to vote for theirs was nice to see.

Well, it seems to be a draw as we approach half-time, so we'll see. I see both Arneb's point about Croatian nationalism (and their police have been extremely ugly in their treatment of migrants) and Lianachan's about Spain's.

And I see Arneb's point about team playing. Belgium holding on and winning even after De Bruyne was injured - there's a lesson there.

Croatia v Spain was a great game.

Oh, and I love these linguistic and/or cultural things.

Yeah, the image is you bite into your pillow because you'd want to scream with rage instead. Another one in that ve is to bite the table edge.

And oh yes, was that a great game! Produced the expected result, but in a heroically roundabout way. Spain on this form are a serious contender for the title.

In sharp contrast, there was great jubilation in the Arnebhaus, with overtired garrul dancing into the night. Always for the underdog, Schängel go home!

A great football night, all in all

It must have been a great game for Switzerland to have held France to a draw even after extra time. I bet Garrul was dancing! (Our garrul would not have been allowed to stay up that late on a school night.)

And inevitably it raised, again, discussion of the path ahead of whoever wins at Wembley tonight. Jürgen Klinsmann, who is now a discussant for the BBC, was saying what Arneb was - that the way the draw has worked out, it's a clear route to the final. And assuming Germany does win tonight, who will they face there? France gone. Portugal gone (the morale advantage Germany would have had if it had been DDD in the final would have been colossal). Croatia gone. Looks like Belgium, Italy or Spain. Arneb, who would you like to see Germany face?

I hear the German press have been commenting on the number of fans being allowed into Wembley to watch the match. They may have a point, but it won't be as packed as the Puskás stadium was the other night. Hopefully the infection rates in both the Netherlands and the Czech Republic are really low - if not, ...

Oh, we are already in our summer vacation, living the high life in the Fichtel Mountains. And we payed for pur lax discipline having to endure a moody and bitey little animal this morning :D .

Yeah, clear route to the final, especially since Cloggistan have already kicked the bucket, the route ahead looks positively breezy. But I am not optimistic for tonight. As you said, England play very much like Mexico, South Korea and Hungary did, only better. If they'll just do their shtick, The Sun and their henchmen will be all over themselves tomorrow, blitzkrieging , bombing, panzering and siegfrieding themselves to a filthy orgasm like you wouldn't believe.

Close, yes, dangerous, no. In fact, we are expecting to be paid a visit both by my parents in law and by brother-in-law' family. From Inlawburg, it is about 90 min up the autobahn and then to the right into the dark forest.

Aw for fucks sake. We will never hear the end of this. Is Scotland the only country that has to watch the Euros with foreign commentary?* Best brace ourselves for the usual insufferable xenophobic gloating. Well done Gary Linkekar though, who managed to mention 1966 in his very first sentence after the final whistle.

* Ah, Wales too I suppose.

England 2 - 0 Germany

Played 186, won 92, drawn 41, lost 53
And thus, our count for that terrible, terrible 2020/21 season ends.

It was the expected result, from a team that hasn't produced good or exciting football in 4 years - seven if you exclude the dreamlike, elegant yet forceful 2017 Confed Cup win, which was achieved with a differen team. The last 7 years were often quite painful, producing a string of inane, boring no-shows against weak team, complete wipeouts in the 2016 semi, two rounds of the Nations League, a World Cup first round with two defeats and all of two goals scored, a 0-6 against Spain and, finally, a humiliation in a game we used to win with unnerving regularity. Hans Flick will have a lot of rebuilding to do after 7 years of decline. At least he will have good material to work with. Can you imagine that three of our players won the Champions League a month ago?

It was far and wide the weakest game of the round. I don't consider England a favourite against either (say) Sweden, Denmark or Belgium/Spain/Italy. This match was good trauma therapy, but not a promise for a successful tournament.

Bit of a damp squib of a finale for Joachim Löw, after all those years and throwing another World Cup on your pile.

It was the seven years after that ruined him. He hardly has any reputation left here. He should have left after '16. Look folks, it's been a great 10 years, but I feel it's going a bit stale. And he would have had (including '06 when he was the brain behond Klinsmann) a stellar record, with two third places, one vice championship and one title, plus two semifinal outs against excellent opposition. I don't think any national coach in pro soccer has reached this density and frequency of top placements.

Football tournaments just won’t be the same without him on the sidelines rummaging in his nose. But yes, time to pull down and rebuild for sure, and the boy done good (for a while).
