Don't forget you are the defending Olympic Champions at rugby. :D

Nederlands beat Canada. I think Canada want a rematch at hockey . . .

I think they play in a variety of cities rather than in one.

They will have my unquestioning support for one game at the World Cup this summer.

So, is it Algeria or Slovenia you've got something against?

I wonder if al-Qaeda would ever field a team.

They would have to convince FIFA that they were a nation state, however small. San Marino, Andorra and Monaco all have teams, despite not being real countries.

Their best bet would be to try and get into the Commonwealth, which would give them entry to the Commonwealth Games.

There are some anomalies in international sport, the Maoris get to have a rugby (both codes) and cricket team, but that has more to do with the small number of countries playing those sports. It is the same for the Pacific Islanders in rugby and West Indies in cricket, except they are collections of nations rather than ethnic groups.

And now, live and direct from the Vatican, a big hand now for the Cardinals.

And then i have a vision of a soccer team taking the field. All wearing long floor length gowns and funny pointed hats.

w00t! Winter Olympics start today.

GB for anything we're in. Norway for anything we're not. But:
Beat Hefti in the bobsleigh, mainly because of his name.
German women biathletes, lingering affection from the Ushi Disl days. Finnish ski jumpers and Nordic combine-ders, so dour they make Scots look cheery.

Ah Uschi Disl, from Bad Tölz, the one and only. Called the turbo Disl by her enchanted followers. I very much hope Magdalena Niner is an adequate substitute for you.

The bobsleigh folks are animals aren't they? Magnificents sides of beef.

Anyone remember Mikka Häkkinen? Talk about dour. Mercedes had this commercial where he picks up a gorgeous women whose car broke down on a mountain road. He impresses her with his racy driving up the switchbacks; she, "nice car, that". He, "yeah, it's a diesel". She, "yeah right, and you're a formula 1 pilot". He, "why yes, of course".

It's Canada v. Germany today/night in Men's Hockey. All I've heard about is how poor the German team is. Which means that I will be rooting for them all the harder, now. :twisted:

Canada 8 - 2 Germany.

Neuner is too good, we always preferred Simone Denkinger. Or Kati Wilhelm in her "ski fast, shoot wildly" phase.

Well, I had a couple of reasons for rooting for Germany:
1st, I'm half German.
2nd, I have several Canadian cousins with whom I exchange spirited (but not vicious) smack talk, and an upset like that would have provided lots of ammo.

Alas, it appears that team Canada is now very motivated (and that Germany played as advertised); I've no doubt they'll be cheering to see the US in the gold medal game.

Silver for US in men's hockey, but at least they made Canada earn their gold. There is talk that the NHL may not take time off for the next Winter games, so it seems unlikely either will do as well.

I watched that up until the end of regulation then went to bed. It was a good game but not enough to keep me up on a school night.

The US and Canada may struggle in Sochi for the same reason they did in Torino as it will be on the larger Olympic size rink rather than the NHL size. Remember the last final was between Sweden and Finland.

Hey, I'm new here, so I can possibly be excused for wrenching this back to the OP and responding to it..... Including copying some parts directly, as appropriate (as I agree with almost all of it)!

Football:
Ross County FC.: supported since they were in the (amateur) Highland League, in the 1980's. They're now fighting for promotion to the premier league (top division in the country).

Whoever is playing Inverness Caledonian Thistle: local rivals (and scummy tinks).

Scottish teams in europe, except the "Old Firm" of Rangers and Celtic (the sharks and the jets)

Shinty:
Lochaber Camanachd: I used to play for them, so I kind of have to.

Internationals:
Scotland : At anything, against anyone.

Whoever is playing England : At anything, regardless of how much I detest the other country. The english media would drive any right thinking person to this.

Scandanavians: due to the huge Scandanavian cultural influence up here, and the number of places whose names come from Old Norse.

Thereafter a myriad of factors, largely irrational.

Anything rather than more Dundonians. Queens will fade, they always do.

Only right and proper.

I have never played, does anyone still have their original front teeth?

A good weekend:
Edinburgh hosed the Ospreys at rugby;
Rangers one game nearer the title;
A Rabo rider won the Paris - Nice prologue;
Rabo won the team and a rider won the points in Murcia.

I should get out more . . .

Yes, but not necessarily in their mouths. They can be found in wee bags, on necklaces, etc..
