Le Mans 24 Hours

Postby Heid the Ba » Mon Feb 02, 2015 11:31 am

Nissan are planning to run this this year. Basically front engined and front wheel drive, with some electric power to the rear wheels. Arguably nuttier than the Deltawing they trialled last year and nothing like anyone else is running. They are relying on aerodynamics and some every complex engineering which is, as yet, unproven.

They set out to build a car that didn't look like the others, which are sort of generic looking but wildly different power trains.

The AUDI for example. Diesel turbo power to the rear wheels, energy recovery system storing the power in a flywheel and converting that to electricity to drive the front wheels.

Toyota go with a normally aspirated petrol V8 with recovered energy stored in a capacitor to help power the rear wheels, while Porsche have a V4 petrol engine, recovered energy stored in batteries with both driving the rear wheels.

A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

If you are seeing an apparent paradox, that means you are missing something.

Some of those are remarkable cool cars, and some aren't.

Details on the Porsche that I couldn't find yesterday.

The race is on Saturday, Porsche are running the fastest laps, with AUDI having handling problems. It will be the usual story, AUDI have a car that will last the time, the question is whether it will be fast enough. The others have fast cars and hope they will last.

Well, as you said. "Stunningly complex" isn't a word that comes to mind when I think about durability. "The more thy overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain".

Porsche did indeed do well, I managed to see none of it, a combination of travelling on Saturday and spending Sunday morning on a balcony looking out at the Med. The apartment wifi is switched off and the council supplied free wifi is sketchy so I couldn't follow online. I suppose I could have searched the eleventy billion shit tv channels available for a Frogovision or DagoTV channel which might have been showing it.

I’m managing to see some of it this year, as we’re at the father in law’s in Stornoway and he’s watching it.
