Look on me and Despair

So, I was passing by a place of business the other day, and heard some song lyrics.
I've heard them before, I think at the beach bar.
One can not be unaffected by such perfectly crafted, beautiful lyrics with such depth and multi-levelled meaning.
How can poets and songwriters continue, knowing that the high water mark of their craft has been reached, and nothing they do will ever measure up?
Shakespeare, Goethe, Pushkin - they were just wasting their time.
