Sandy

Sandy has been gone for a while now, but today she made her return. YAY!

Some time ago, when COVID came along, places like my local market removed a lot of public things. No more park bench out front or inside the store for sitting. In the pharmacy area they removed the machine that let you take your blood pressure. And they removed...Sandy. Sandy is the coin-operated horsey ride for little kids. Sandy sits outside many grocery stores and other areas where parents might have their children along. Usually a 25 cent ride, at my Meijer store, Sandy is only one penny to ride. In fact it is sort of a fun thing: many folks, myself included, will take the odd penny or two from their change and drop it on the base of the ride. Kids find them and ride for "free". And if mom tries to object, "I don't have any pennies," the kid can say LOOK HERE!.

Well Sandy came back today, and behind her on the wall was a huge 10-foot-square sign, "Sandy is BACK" And she is still just 1 cent.

There are other named horse rides, but Sandy is the most common and has been around for decades.

Sandy deserves an Olympic Gold just for existing.

These things exist in Germany, too. But it's mostly cars, planes or UFOs, not horses, that are on display. The price per ride is a lot steeper here, because the companies putting them up are actually trying to make money, not give kids a good time. You can easily be out of 50 c or a Euro for one ride, and the plasticky monsters are the bane and hate of bag-laden mothers with whining, querulous four-year-olds in tow. Fathers, too. Like, me, too.

That's great that they keep it running, and even better for 1 cent.
Here we have $1 and $2 coins (loonies and two-nies), so a little less kid friendly for these kind of things.

Oh it is at least 25 cents anywhere else if not more. And yes, kiddie rides come in planes, fire trucks, boats and other animals, even a tiny carousel, but Sandy has been around for decades. Meijer is not trying to make money here, just something to make taking kids to the store less stressful.

Every Meijer has a Sandy.
