Broken RCA Plugs

Postby Мастер » Fri Apr 08, 2011 4:10 am

So, when the metal part of a male RCA plug comes off and gets stuck inside the female plug, what are the options? A quick Google comes up various answers that roughly fall into these categories.

a) Use various objects, tweezers, sticky things, whatever, to try to remove the metal from the outside.

b) Open the device containing the female plug up, and see if it can be dislodged from the inside.

c) Open the device containing the female plug up, remove the female plug, and solder in a new one.

I don't feel real good about c). Any other options, or comments on a) or b)?

I'd probably try to catch it with a screw or drill bit.

All of the above. Is it easily reachable?

Rare earth magnet, Crazy glue (on a probe) Focussed vacume force. (Like narrowed through a straw.)

Depends on why it would be stuck that hard in the first place. :-k

And there is the winner, even if you didn't specify the size of the drill bit :P Started with 5/64", which was too small, but then 3/32" did the trick!

Well, it's in a wood cabinet, and there is enough slack in the cables to allow it to be pulled out (the way it broke in the first place). So reachable from the outside - inside, would require removal of the case. Fortunately not necessary, as Llance's suggestion worked.

Pulling it out of the wood cabinet, carelessly. There must have been some sort of gravitational field in front of the cabinet, because as soon as it came out, it began to move downward, and one of the cables sticking out the back, pressed against the wood cabinet, bending the plug, and breaking off the metal sheath. I am now take precautions to counteract the gravitational field when pulling it out of the cabinet.
