It's quite possible the troubles are due to operator misuse of the Windows 7 "lock up the computer and list all processes as 'not responding' for five minutes or more" feature. This particular operator previously had Linux (on the same computer, in front of the same chair), which didn't have this feature.

You gotta check those chairs. Some of them are only compatible up to XP.

I suspect this chair may only be Linux/BSD compatible, and am wondering if I should take steps to resolve this incompatibility.

I hate this combination of HP and Windows NR (Not Responding).

I was typing a lengthy email, and the wireless networking cut out on me. This happens on a regular basis. Once it goes, the only way I can get it back is by rebooting the computer. But then I would lose the email, which is being saved as a draft on the IMAP email server (no longer accessible, due to the wireless network cut out).

So what to do? Well, how about if I just keep typing, then choose the "send later" option, which saves the email locally, and sends it when the computer is back on-line? Sounds good, except after a substantial amount of typing, the computer froze completely. Not even the mouse pointer responds to movement. Nothing. Dead as the dinosaurs.

So took the laptop into the other room, and read the lengthy email from the screen of the dead computer, and typed it into a live one.

I hate HP/Windows NR!

Try completely removing the wireless driver and let it reload.

Or, you can get tiny wireless adapters that will plug into a USB port. Disable the internal one and use an add-on.

OK, may try it if I get a chance, thanks. But, as this is the computer from my old job (and I'm done there, just running through unused vacation days now), I may also just limp along until the one from my new job arrives.

The computer completely freezing up sounds like a separate issue, though. But soon to be someone else's issue . . .
