Thinking in the context of Apple's system, iTunes, here. But, every audio file included in my library has some sort of meta-data, name of artist, name of work, genre, etc., all this sort of thing.
So my question is - is this information included in the MP3 or MP4 file itself? Or is it stored somewhere separately?

For MP3s, the <ID3> tag which contains the metadata is within the file itself.
