The Spinning Beachball of Death

Postby Мастер » Tue Nov 22, 2016 11:35 am

My four year old Apple computer is giving it almost continually. So I am doing something I have never done before.

Well, something I've never done before with Mac OS X. I've done it dozens of times (maybe hundreds?) with Windows and Linux computers.

Reformat, and reinstallation from scratch.

At present, booted up on a thumb drive - it was surprising to me how easy it was. I've had great difficulty getting Linux systems to boot from a thumb drive, and I don't think I've ever managed it with Windows. With Mac OS X, it was easy.

So booted up, and copying the entire hard disk to another USB drive.

Once that's done, reformat/reinstallation. And I will have entered the brave new world.

I blame Obama for this. Or Trump. Or Clinton. Or Putin. Someone.

I've installed Mac OS on a PC a couple of times and it was pretty easy. Good luck.

I've reinstalled OS on several of my macs, at one time or another. Nothing to it.

Booted up on a USB, and copying the entire hard disk to another USB. That process started two days ago. About 1.2 million out of the 1.5 million files have been copied.

Incidentally, I had major problems with my mid-2012 macbook pro stalling, and playing beach ball at the slightest provocation. Took it to a apple technician. He diagnosed a faulty SATA hard drive connection cable. Said it was a common design flaw with these and he does this repair a lot. All fixed.
