But although I can get a very good look, I cannot manage to get a successful photograph. All I get is a big round yellow glow in the photo.

I suppose the primary image looks round because is grotesquely overexposed (I took some with another camera that gives me greater control, and set the shutter speed to the maximum - the result was similar). But the side image is a reflection inside the camera or lens, I guess.

Lens flare :D . Which proves, of course, that this "eclipse" is a total hoax perpetrated on us by NASA, because lens flare doesn't exist.

The test is simple enough. At totality, first check to see if it is pitch black where you are. After all the sun is completely blocked, right? And also note if any of the resulting non-shadows are non-parallel.

Also look to see if any of those little white X's are floating around the sky. Or are they +'s?

Ah sorry, I didn't notice this second post. Yes, that is the explanation. I once photographed a total exlipse seconds after totality, and while the sun was just a white ray figure, the lens flare looked like a diamond ring.
