Or should that be holey Mars.

Quite possibly, the spots are entrances to deep underground caves capable of protecting Martian life, were it to exist.

It'll be so cool to see what they find when they send robots into those things. 8)

That looks... odd.

It would be easy to believe it's a fabricated image.

Mars has a lot of iron on or near the surface, right? These must be places where it's rusted through. :D

I wonder if they are skylights to some deep lava tubes?

I agree with Lance; that looks pretty strange. Section of a lava tube that collapsed or eroded into the open?

Woo-woo explanation: It's just a big hole that the stagehands knocked in the Moon landing set when the NASA folks decided to reuse it to stage Mars pictures. See, we can't actually send anything past Earth orbit because our entire planet is under quarantine, so NASA still has to fake all those orbital images.

In fact, there's more going on in the image than just the mystery hole. A little ways below it, clearly visible in the full-sized image, is the face, torso, and arms of a humanoid figure, flipping a double-deuce to the orbital camera. I put a rectangle around the area, and then tried to outline the figure as best I could. (This'll thumbnail, right?)

Well applying Occam's Razor, it is either a sink hole or a missile silo. We know that a sink hole wouldn't be that perfectly round, so obviously it is a missile silo. Probably left over from that allegedly fake radio broadcast "The War of the Worlds."
