Spurious correlations

Seems like as good a section as any for this...

This book had a quick review in Scientific American. Just the sort of thing I like. We so often see such correlations being used as rationales for various social issues. My reply is usually, 99% of mass-murderers/heroin addicts/bank robbers/etc started out on mother's milk.

"Spurious correlation" has quite a specific meaning, as originally used by Karl Pearson. Some of the cases given are likely examples of spurious correlation in the original sense, whereas some might be more accurately described as a "spurious relationship". Sometime when Мастер is not straight from an extended drink-a-thon at the Raffles Hotel, he will generate some random numbers and produce a case of spurious correlation.
