April 18th, 2008 - Joram Galleros Villanueva, a 32 year old Mexican, is swimming in rough sea at Delfines Beach, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico and gets into difficulty. Others try to help but he disappears. When his body was recovered two days later, both arms and part of the legs were missing, and there was tissue loss on the head and face. It is thought that the man drowned, and shark bites were post mortem. And yes, yes I am watching Jaws and googling shark attacks.

20th April 1439 - an inquest took place in Tain looking into the rights and privileges of the town, after its charters were destroyed during a clan feud in 1427. The original document from 1439 is lost but the local museum has a very old copy made in the late 16th century. The document mentions that the Immunity and Privileges of the town were first granted by the “illustrious King of Scots, Malcolm Canmore”, and later confirmed by Robert I of Scotland.

[patches on elbows]”Ceann” doesn’t just mean head as in the part of the body, it also means head as in highest office or top of something like it does in English/Scots. So he’s actually “Big Chief Malcom”[/patches on elbows]

And although I see a new thread has been started on it, I think yesterday should be included. On 20 April 2021, a white police officer was convicted of the murder (not just manslaughter) of a black man through the use of unreasonable force. That will resonate.

Slightly late, but 76 years ago yesterday, the National Liberation Committee for Northern Italy proclaimed that it had seized power from Mussolini's government. Marked as Liberation Day in Italy ever since.

On a happier note, on this day in 1965, two wholly insignificant young professionals in a peculiar and strange little town called, depending on political persuasion, Westberlin, West-Berlin or Berlin (West), tied the knot. They went on to have a single child three years later, a son, and he went on to pester a wholly insignificant internet forum for more than fifteen years later in life. Not that it matters much, but, you know.

5th May 1945, something of a historical curiosity: The Battle of Castle Itter, where US troops, Wehrmacht and SS troops fought against other SS troops. One lot of Germans could see which way the wind was blowing and the other lot either couldn't or knew how much trouble they were in. Many of the "bad" SS were French or Rumanians with no home to go to.
