Well, I applaud the Swedes for holding out agaimst Spain. And in the case of ARG-CHI, at least one of us will be happy afterwards.

Yes, Sweden did well to keep Spain out but it was mostly a pretty boring match I think.

So:

Scotland 0 - 2 Czech Republic
Poland 1 - 2 Slovakia
Spain 0 - 0 Sweden

‘Shland up tomorrow!

17:00 Hungary v Portugal

20:00 France v Germany

0-0 at half time. Portugal can surely do better! Come on, take Orban’s boys down!

And Arneb, you know the deal. If Germany are playing anyone other than England, we back them, so good luck! :) We’ll be watching at least part of it.

Some of us, of course, back Germany particularly when they’re playing England!

I appreciate everyone's support here, folks. But we are in for tough night.

Portugal weren't exactly fumbling either...

A few decades ago, completely ignorant of any aspect of Scottish-English history, rivalry, anything at all, I asked Richard if Scottish fans, if they weren't in a tournament themselves, would at least support their English neighbours as kind of a second-best option. He looked at me with a sympathetic smile and said, you know, Arneb, if England were playing Mars...

Mind you, most Englishmen completely fail to get this - and a lot else. A friend moved to Glasgow many years ago - in fact, Arneb and I, with our respective future spouses, met up with him there - but that’s another story. He told me that he was asked what team he supported. So being a good South London lad, he replied, “Crystal Palace”. The guy looked at him and thought, “stupid Englishman”. So he tried again. “Aye but what team do you support?” Martin now worked out what he actually meant, but had no time for it. So as his then girlfriend was from Airdrie, he said, “Hamilton Athletic”. Now the guy got really frustrated. “BUT WHAT TEAM DO YOU SUPPORT???” I got off more lightly when, also in Glasgow, I said, “I know who the Oranges are and I know who the Greens are, but who the hell are the Blues?” Apologies to Heid!

Speaking of frustration...

1 down after only 20 min? By an own goal?? By Hummels???

This isn't going to end well.

By a somewhat poetic twist, Hummels headed in the winner in that epic 2014 quarterfinal in Brasil after only ten min.

Germany dominated the 2nd half, but I never got the feeling they were going to score. Just nothing doing up front. France defended well, and looked dangerous every time they went forward (2 offside goals even).

So:

Hungary 0 - 3 Portugal

Germany 0 - 1 France

Next up:

14:00 Finland v Russia
17:00 Turkey v Wales
20:00 Italy v Switzerland

Woohoo, Wales up 1-0 at 60 minutes! Even after Bale screwed up the penalty. I get the point about them having voted for Brexit, but still. And if we don't support Putin's boys, why should we support Erdogan's?

It’s not just Brexit, I have ties to Turkey. Plus, of course, Gareth Bale looks like a bin bag awaiting transport to the bins outside.

The land of my mother’s seals it! Against a freaking hostile crowd! OK, I have no illusions that Italy won’t be a very different story, but still.

So, another day of disappointing but unsurprising results for me. I’d thought Wales would have drawn. Italy continue to look extremely good.

Finland 0 - 1 Russia
Turkey 0 - 2 Wales
Italy 3 - 0 Switzerland

Tomorrow:

14:00 Ukraine v North Macedonia
17:00 Denmark v Belgium
20:00 Netherlands v Austria

When I write out my predictions and hopes that way, it seems I tend to favour the underdogs.

We aren't surprised, and we don't lile you any less for it. :D

I'll be on-call tonight, so little football ahead for me. I don't watch a lot of it anyway because it pains me to see well-oiled machines like Italy and France while our own boys, mostly pushing 30 or past it, rumble along under the most unimaginative management. This will be a tough exit. Maybe I can enjoy it once we are out.

I wouldn’t write off schland! quite yet.

A day of no surprises, and none of my favoured teams winning.

Ukraine 2 - 1 North Macedonia
Denmark 1 - 2 Belgium
Netherlands 2 - 0 Austria

Tomorrow:

14:00 Sweden v Slovakia
17:00 Croatia v Czech Republic
20:00 England v Scotland (<- oldest fixture in international football)

Of course if Scotland somehow do win then England take 3 points and give Scotland back 1, as per the Barnett formula.
