Modern goal posts are sturdy steel pipe, but when I was of college age, the goal posts were simple H-shaped affairs made of wood. And tradition was, after the game we ran on the field and tore them down, and broke them up for keepsakes. My alma mater Michigan State Univ went to the Rose Bowl new years day 1966, and I was there. Somewhere around I still have a piece of those goal posts.
